The Adventures of Mooka & Lou: Wild Rice and Fire is the debut book by Max Winders, inspired by countless canoe trips to the Boundary Waters with his family. Featuring Mooka and Lou, two spirited adventurers inspired by his own grandchildren, the story is brought to life through stunning illustrations and captivating storytelling. Max’s goal is to inspire a love for the outdoors in children while creating a reading experience that sparks curiosity and imagination. This book is as much a tribute to the wilderness as it is a call to explore and simply “Go!”

THE CHALLENGE

Max Winders came to us with a vision: bring The Adventures of Mooka & Lou: Wild Rice and Fire to life as a high-quality hardcover book that felt timeless and captivating. Achieving this required more than just printing pages. It meant designing a layout that complemented the illustrations while maintaining a polished, professional look. Collaborating closely with the book’s illustrator, we arranged the layout to ensure every detail aligned with the story’s spirit.

On top of the creative challenges, we had to find a vendor capable of producing a durable, beautifully bound hardcover that met Max’s high standards. The process demanded precision and care at every step, ensuring the final product was as special as the adventure it told.

THE SOLUTION

To bring Max Winders’ vision for The Adventures of Mooka & Lou: Wild Rice and Fire to life, Team Abovo tackled both creative and logistical challenges head-on. Our design team worked closely with Max and his illustrator to craft a book layout that enhanced the story’s charm while ensuring the artwork shone. To complete the project, we solved distribution needs by designing and developing a simple yet elegant e-commerce website using Shopify, making it easy for readers to purchase and connect with the story.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

This project shows how creativity and collaboration can bring a story to life. The book has since been celebrated for its story and for the immersive, professional design that makes it a keepsake.

In addition to designing the book, Team Abovo created a simple yet beautiful e-commerce website to help share the story and sell the book. Using Shopify, we developed a site that perfectly complements the spirit of the project, making it easy for readers to purchase and connect with the world of The Adventures of Mooka & Lou. We also prepared a separate file tailored for Amazon KDP, ensuring the book could reach an even wider audience through one of the most popular self-publishing platforms.
