Meet KOKADA: The iconic coconut spread

Breanna Atkinson, co-founder of Kokada, came to us in 2019 with her product (only 2 flavors at the time!) and her ideas on what her company could become. Our first initiatives together were to give the logo a complete redesign and build out the company’s brand style guide; with this redesign came new package design. Our services and work with this coconut-based spread company have evolved over the years. Whether it’s a product photoshoot, e-commerce site development, press release writing and distribution or simply testing new products, the Kokada crew and Team Abovo continue to work closely together to develop creative solutions for each of their challenges.

WHY WE BELIEVE IN KOKADA

No one believes in Kokada as much as its co-founders, Breanna Atkinson and Jared Golestani. Their passion for their product, and its story, are heartwarming and inspiring. When they came to us, their first priority was to do everything with absolute quality; a priority that hasn’t changed. When it comes to Kokada, there aren’t many services we don’t deploy. Aligning ourselves with a team with these values allows our skillsets to shine, completely fulfilling our team.

THE OPPORTUNITY

With goals to become a national company, a foresight (and flexibility) for scalability and growth always had to be top-of-mind. As we develop Kokada’s brand, story, packaging, e-commerce site and more we continue to ask the questions: 1. How does another product (flavor) fit into this? 2. What happens when/if a new product size is introduced? 3. What is the strategy for entering new markets? 4. How do we educate consumers how to use this original spread? 5. What would enhance a customers’ experience with our products? 6. What strategies can we deploy to capture the most amount of direct-to-consumer sales? 7. Who are our customers? 8. How can a wholesale program exist and operate?

LOGO AND BRAND DESIGN

A company’s brand is their identity and a company’s identity is their brand. Kokada came to us with a great product that was created by two incredible people. The story was there; it was incredible, and we believed in it. The challenge for us: Create a brand and identity that properly tells the story of this incredible product and its founders. Challenge accepted. Through multiple exploratory sessions with Kokada Co-founder, Breanna Atkinson and many drafts, we finally landed on the Kokada logo and brand. Breanna was incredible at sharing her ideas, inspiration, thoughts and at pulling in her family and friends for feedback. The Kokada brand and logo is truly an image of sphere of friends and family Breanna, and her co-founder Jared, surround themselves by. Creating and brand, logo and identity is a long process, and it’s something every client should take seriously. This process is what creates a strong foundation for your company and doing it well is key to properly communicating your company’s mission, products, values and beliefs.

PRODUCT PACKAGING DESIGN

Aside from its recipes, Kokada’s product packaging is perhaps the most important piece of its business. The recipe behind The Iconic Coconut Spread (and all of its different flavors) can be absolutely killer, but without packaging to match, consumers may not take it from the shelf. As we began the design process for what became the jars behind this iconic spread there were so many things to consider. We needed to create a design and look for different flavors (and to allow for the addition of flavors!); the jars needed educational content to teach customers how to use the coconut spread; we needed designs that would appeal to young and old (and everywhere in between); and we needed to consider different jar and label materials.

SWAG, MERCH & EXPO DESIGN

Once the brand, logo and packaging were complete, it was time for the Kokada team to sell, sell, sell! Our job wasn’t done yet! We helped equip the Kokada salesteam (Breanna, Jared & Adam) with all the tools they needed to promote (and sell!) their product including a killer expo design, merch for giveaways and some sweet swag to strut around in!
